RHEIN-NECKAR

Mannheim - City of Squares and Innovation

Mannheim, the second-largest city in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region, is much more than just an economic center. With its unique grid layout, diverse cultural scene, and strong focus on innovation, Mannheim combines tradition with forward-looking thinking. Around 320,000 people live and work in this dynamic city, which is world-famous as the birthplace of the automobile and the bicycle.

Mannheim’s economic strength lies in its diversity. Large companies such as BASF, Roche, and John Deere shape the city alongside a vibrant start-up scene and medium-sized businesses. The chemical industry, healthcare, and creative industries are particularly strong. The city actively promotes innovative business models, for example through the MAFINEX Technology Park, which connects start-ups with established companies and research institutions.

A key success factor is close cooperation with science. The University of Mannheim, known for its excellent business faculty, and Mannheim University of Applied Sciences as a pioneer in engineering sciences, significantly contribute to the city’s innovative strength. Together with companies, they develop forward-looking solutions in digitalization, artificial intelligence, and sustainable urban development.

However, Mannheim is not only strong economically and scientifically but also a model for social dialogue. Projects such as the “Mannheim Alliance for Living Together in Diversity” and the “Social City” concept promote participation and integration. The city focuses on sustainable development, for example through the “Mannheim 2030” climate protection program, which involves all stakeholders—from citizens to scientists to businesses.
